ATRT Stipend Opportunity

Want more money to attend TLA this year? Apply for the Automation and Technology Roundtable (ATRT) Conference Stipend! See details below or at the ATRT Website.

The Automation and Technology Round Table (ATRT) of the Texas Library Association will make available two stipends of $700 for library employees who are involved in library automation and technology services to attend a TLA Conference and Annual Assembly. The purpose of these stipends is to encourage membership and participation in TLA and ATRT for those who are new or newly-new to the library technology field and to TLA. Recipients will gain insight into the Automation and Technology Round Table by volunteering during the conference.

Requirements:

  1. Must be involved in library automation and technology activities.
  2. Must agree to apply part of the stipend to membership in TLA, if not already a member.
  3. Must agree to become a member of the Automation and Technology Round Table, if not already a member.
  4. Must agree to attend and be recognized at ATRT’s annual business meeting at the TLA conference.
  5. Must agree to attend ATRT’s business meeting at annual assembly, if that part of the stipend is accepted.
  6. Must agree to work for four hours as a volunteer during the TLA Conference at ATRT sponsored activities — the Technology Showcase or the Net Fair.
  7. Must agree to submit a report and evaluation on the TLA Conference telling whether it fulfilled your expectations and what, if anything, you learned that you will be able to put to use in your library. This report must be written and submitted to the ATRT Chair within 30 days of the conference.
  8. Ongoing interest in and involvement with ATRT activities.

Timeline:

  • January 15, 2009 — Application form will be made available electronically via the web, Adobe PDF , or a Microsoft Word document.
  • February 20, 2009 — Letters of recommendation from immediate
supervisors must be sent via FAX or email.
  • February 20, 2009 — Application deadline.
  • March 9, 2009 — Letters will be sent both to those applicants receiving a stipend and to those who will not be receiving a stipend. Notification will be sent to the ATRT Chair for volunteer assignments. Notification will also be sent to the TLA Office.
  • April, 2009 — Introduce stipend winners at ATRT Business Meeting during TLA Conference.
  • May, 2009 — Stipend winners shall send their Conference Report to the ATRT Chair within 30 days of the TLA Conference.

Evaluation of Applications:

  1. The applicant demonstrates interest in professional development. Attendance at workshops will be a criterion.
  2. The applicant shows commitment to library automation and technology.
  3. The applicant has good written communication skills and expresses her/himself well.
  4. An attempt will be made to award stipends to applicants from libraries in all parts of the state and to applicants from different types of libraries.
  5. Applications are encouraged from both professional and support library staff.
  6. Applicant shows interest in ATRT or technology activities.

Funds

One-half of the conference stipend ($300) shall be made available to the stipend winners prior to the TLA Conference. The winners shall contact the TLA office for this advance in order to defray conference expenses. The remaining funds ($300) will be awarded upon receipt of the Conference Report by the ATRT Chair. The $100 stipends for the TLA Annual Assembly will be awarded upon confirmation of attendance at Annual Assembly.

Volunteer to help with the Disaster Committee’s annual raffle!

From the CULD list:

Got a free hour at Annual Conference??

Consider volunteering at the Disaster Relief Committee’s annual raffle! Tickets will be sold Wednesday and Thursday (until General Session II). Tickets are $5 each and the entire $5 goes directly to assisting Texas libraries dealing with disasters. (To preview the artwork being raffled off, please visit the Itsy Bitsy Gallery: http://www.txla.org/html/wells/gallery.html).

Making its official debut at Annual Conference will be the second edition of TLA’s calendars. We hear it has tattoos! The calendars will be for sale at the TLA Store and we’re going to try to have some at the raffle booth, too. Proceeds from calendar sales also go to the Disaster Relief Committee fund.

Hurricane Ike nearly depleted our funds. Please help us rebuild our account before the next hurricane season, tornado, fire, water leak/flood, or other disaster strikes!

To volunteer, you may contact Shirley Martyn directly at smartyn AT stmarytx DOT edu or visit the Conference Volunteer web page and complete the form (http://www.txla.org/groups/forms/Conf_volunteer.html). We will be selling tickets (and maybe calendars) from 7:30 to 5:00 on Wednesday, April 1st (no foolin’!), as well as at the President’s Party from 8-10 that evening. Thursday, April 2nd we’ll staff the booth from 7:30 to 4:00, which is the start of General Session II and when the raffle drawing takes place.
